Haiti and Breast Milk Donation
The US Navy has established a medical unit aboard one of the ships in Haiti to handle pre-term infants. The lactation
consultant from Bethesda is assisting with establishing milk supplies for the moms with breast pumps, but donor milk is needed.
Not all donated milk will be sent to Haiti. If you aren't lactating, consider a donation to one of the regional milk banks.
Please encourage our colleagues and the women we serve to contact their regional milk bank for more information.

** ADA Policy Initiatives and Advocacy Report **
*Health Care Reform: Details that will impact you* The health care reform debate could be nearing an end and there are many sections in the Senate bill that can have a wide-sweeping
effect on the dietetics profession. Below is a list of provisions that are currently in the Senate bill and among those being
considered by the House. These sections concerning nutrition services and registered dietitians are supported by ADA.
*Sections*
*Senate bill* *H.R. 3590 - Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act* *Healthy
Aging. Preventive Services for Adults 55-64*
Establishes a grant program for state and local health departments
and Indian tribes for: public health interventions, community preventive screenings, and referral and treatment for chronic
diseases for individuals between 55 and 64 years old. Intervention *activities include improving nutrition* and increasing
physical activity.
*Workforce* Analyzes current health care workforce to determine gaps in delivery of care
in underserved communities. *Includes registered dietitians.*
*Wellness/Prevention for Employees* Allows
the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Labor to set discounts up to 50 percent of insurance premiums
if the wellness program is determined beneficial for employee.
*Prevention Task Forces, etc.* Establishes
a Preventive Services Task Force and a Community Preventive Services Task Force. Establishes Prevention and Public
Health Investment Fund – funding increases from $500 million in 2010 to $2 billion in 2015 and thereafter.
*Medicare Preventive Services* Adjusts current law to allow the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid to expand current
and new preventive services. *Medical Nutrition Therapy is included in the list of possible services to be expanded.* CMS
is allowed to make these determinations. *Eliminates cost-sharing for preventive services* (co-payments and deductibles),
*including MNT services.* Provides for an annual wellness visit. *Registered dietitians are listed as providers*
for screening and counseling.
*Medicaid* Establishes a five-year grant program to incentivize healthy lifestyles including: *weight reduction, reduce cholesterol, prevent the onset of diabetes and diabetes self managements.* Covers preventive services recommended by the USPSTF.
*Home Health* Establishes a demonstration program
that would provide direct, home-based care. *Registered dietitians are listed as possible providers under this program*.
*Medical Homes* MEDICAID: Allows for medical home waivers for state-coordinated programs that focus on diabetes
treatment and prevention, treat cardiovascular disease and treat those considered overweight. *Nutritionists are listed
among providers under this program, allowing for inclusion of registered dietitians.* COMMUNITY: Establishes the medical
home in public health programs and *includes the dietitian as part of the medical home team*.
*Nutrition Labeling
of Menu items at Chain Restaurants* Requires chains with 20 or more outlets to post calories on menus, menu boards (including
drive-thru) and food display tags, with additional information (fat, saturated fat, carbohydrates, sodium, protein and fiber)
available in writing upon request. *Requires national uniformity*, so that there is consistency in information provided. States
and localities would not be able to require additional nutrient information on menus.
*Next Steps* In order
to move forward, Congress will have to pass a final bill. The House is expected to take the Senate bill with a few amendments
to the floor for a vote as early as next week; if passed, the bill will then be sent back to the Senate for final approval
and then to the President for signature. If it does not pass, then Congress will likely try to move smaller health reform
bills later in 2010 and 2011. If passed, all of the above provisions will then have to go through the rule-making
process before implementation. Therefore, nothing that is in writing today will go into effect immediately and ADA and its
members will have an opportunity to iron out the details of these programs by working with the appropriate government agency.
*Take Action Today!* It is crucial that you, as an ADA member, encourage Congress to support these very important
provisions—even if you have already sent a letter in the past! There are three ways for ADA members to contact legislators.
*Option 1:* Go to eatright.org http://list.eatright.org/t/4625958/26201160/3753/0/ and click on "For Members." Under "Public Policy,"
there is a "Resources" section (soon to be renamed "Take Action"). There you can send a prepared letter
through ADA’s Grassroots Manager. (Note: You will be prompted to log-in a second time to send your letters.)
*Option 2:* Send your own personalized letter supporting nutrition services provisions in health
reform. Go to your legislators’ Web sites and find "Contact me." Each Representative and Senator has
a section on their site from which you can send emails directly to them and their staff.
*Option
3:* Call or visit your Representative and Senators and tell them you support nutrition services provisions. Their phone
numbers and addresses also located on the legislators’ Web sites.

MDDA Membership & MDDA Questions?
Why did MDDA align with ADA?
This year, MDDA
has aligned with TDA and ADA. What does that mean? You must be a member of ADA to join MDDA. Most district
associations have aligned with their state association and ADA this year. Questions? Ask , Dee at deepratt@dietitianassociates.com
Can RD's that are NOT ADA members
still come to CEU meetings?
YES, and we still want them to be involved with our association. They can come to our CEU
meetings but, just not join as a member. There will be a small fee per CEU meeting and some meeting costs will vary
depending on CEU length. Again, if you or other local RD's have questions, please ask Dee.
